Pre-School Venture on Autumnal Walk

At Daisykins Day Nursery in Rugby we are keen to provide the children with as many hands on experiences as possible. Pre-School's current topic of interest is Autumn and gave the children and the practitioners the opportunity to go on an adventure.

The children discussed the need to stay safe when out and about and were asked to think of ideas or to reflect upon previous outings to decide how they were going to do so. The first hand flew in the air and one of the children reminded the practitioner's that they all needed to wear a hi-vis jacket to make sure others can see them. Their friend then suggested that they held hands so that they stayed close together and didn't get lost. Lastly, one of the children told their friends and the practitioners that they must "stay with the group" when they got to the local park, "shouldn't talk to strangers" and couldn't "run off to see dogs."

The practitioners talked to the children about what they must do when looking for Autumn objects to collect. The children agreed to the rules, put their coats on and set off on their walk to the local park. As they walked to the park, the children continued to discuss other hazards and risks. The practitioners were incredibly impressed with their understanding of the environment around them and were pleased to hear that they knew how to stay safe.

When at the park, the children all found one object that reminded them of Autumn. A lot of these were leaves! This sparked a great conversation in which the children were encouraged to use a fantastic range of vocabulary, including new words, to describe the leaves they had found; "crisp", "auburn" and "lurid" to name a few.

The children had lots of fun collecting a variety of leaves, discussing the array of colours, sizes and shapes as they put them into the bag. After a busy morning at the park the children returned to nursery to eat their well earned dinner.

We are looking forward to seeing what they children used the leaves for!
