Fruit and vegetable picking at Malt Kiln Farm

Children from Daisykins Nursery climbed aboard the mini bus and set off for a trip to Malt Kiln Farm to join in Strawberry picking. The older children paired up with their friends, collected their tubs and ventured off to find the strawberries whilst the little ones toddled along behind. A field full of strawberries awaited the children, practitioners talked about why some of them were green and that these were not ready to be picked yet. The children wasted no time and began picking the strawberries they placed them in their plastic tubs and before they knew it their tubs were full of bright red juicy strawberries.Practitioners lifted the little ones up so they could reach the plants, however they didn't need help in pulling the strawberries off as they were masters at this. Children point to the strawberries saying "More". Everyone had fun picking the strawberries and each and everyone's tubs were full so it was time to go and get them weighed.
The children were very proud of themselves and couldn't wait to show their friends the big strawberries they picked, this first hand experience enabled children to understand how strawberries, raspberries and runner beans grow, it was great way to teach children from a young age where food comes from.
