An average day in our Toddler room at Daisykins nursery in Rugby is full of exciting activities and new challenging experiences to help your Toddler thrive, develop and grow.
The children start their day by being greeted by their key worker and then sit down to have breakfast with their friends. Your toddler is able to make their own choice of cereal and are encouraged to serve it themselves with the help of a practitioner. After breakfast the children then take part in some free choice activities while they wait for their friends to arrive and finish breakfast. After breakfast time the children tidy up and gather round to have circle time together. During this time practitioners will do the register and sing the hello song. They may then have a story, sing some songs incorporating sign language/actions or do some group based activities, for example flashcards or a guess the noise game.
The children are then split in to groups, sometimes based on their age, e.g. older or younger children, or based on key groups. The children will then have the opportunity to go to the garden, soft play or dance floor in their groups to take part in some structured activities. Around 10am it is snack time and the Toddlers have a rolling snack table so the children are able to access snack when they would like to, giving them a choice of when they would like to stop playing to have it and they are able to choose what they would like.
After snack the Practitioners will set up planned activities based on the interests of the children and things they have observed. These may also be focused around the book of the fortnight or song of the month. A range of activities are provided, covering multiple areas of the EYFS, including messy play, exploration and discovery, small world, etc.
After a busy morning of exploring and learning the Toddlers are gathered back together and go outside while lunch is being served. The children are then encouraged to wash their hands and take a seat at the table before tucking into a home cooked meal prepared on site by our wonderful chefs! If a child has an allergy or special dietary requirement then an alternative equivalent meal is made so that they don’t feel different to their peers.
When all the plates have been cleared and pudding has been demolished it is the end of our morning session and while some children may go home, some of the children may go and have a nap in our sleep room. The children sleep on sleep mats with their own bedding and can have anywhere between half an hour and 90 minutes sleep. This is totally down to the individual child and parental preference and can be limited if required or longer if needed.
While some of the children are sleeping our afternoon session children will arrive, and they are greeted and then offered some of the activities the morning children took part in, gradually being joined by their friends as the Toddlers wake up. At roughly 2pm the children will sit down together to have snack which is normally milk and a biscuit. They are then ready for an afternoon full of adventure.
The children are gathered around for afternoon circle time where practitioners will take the register again, sing the hello song and then either read a story, sing some songs or conduct another game. The Toddlers are then split into groups and will visit another area of there nursery and take part in planned activities set up by the Practitioners. The Toddlers are encouraged to independently choose what they would like to do and are often offered choices of what to do or where to go, sometimes opting for the selection with a group majority.
After a fun filled afternoon it is then time for a light tea before getting ready for home time. The children are normally excited to tell their parents/carers what activities they have taken part in and where they have been. Throughout the day the children’s nappies are changed regularly and toileting needs are catered for as many of our Toddlers are starting their adventure into potty training and this is something we will work closely with parents to achieve.
