In May at Daisykins Whitehall in Rugby we have focused our Parent/Carer mornings on Spring and Planting and Growing.
The first one to be held was for Baby room, however due to the rain we had to hold it inside rather than outside. The babies were encouraged to use their different senses to explore a tuft spot of green spaghetti and farm animals, a tray containing flowers frozen in ice and a tuft spot of compost and vegetables. A couple of the children’s parents came to join in the fun and we all got very messy!
Next to have their Spring morning was Toddlers. Different stations were set up both indoors and outdoors so the children could free flow and explore. These included a water tray and a tuft spot of green spaghetti with mother and baby farm animals. The children talked about which baby animal belonged to which mummy, what they were called and what different noises they made. Practitioners also hid carrots, potatoes and parsnips in a deep tub of compost and encouraged the children to use spades to dig them up and talk about what they had found. One child said “I’ve found a carrot, there so yummy!”
Another activity the Toddlers took part in was making their own cress heads. They were given a plastic cup and then encouraged to dip some cotton wool into a cup of water and pop it into their cup. After repeating this two to three times practitioners then told the children they needed to pour some cress seeds into their cup very carefully. They were then told they had to wait about a week for their cress to grow. Practitioners took pictures of the children’s faces and added these to the side of their cups so that it looked like they were growing their own hair! Again some parents/carers came to join in with the fun and brought their children along even though it wasn’t their normal session.
